Domaine de Jean-Bon 2000
Domaine de Jean-Bon 2000, Cask #002
Distilled in: 2000 | Grapes: 100% Baco | ABV: 51%
Appellation: Bas-Armagnac
Village: Toujouse
Tasting notes:
Seaside drift wood, a sultry sweetness of baking spices and brown sugar and forest floor notes on the nose. Palate is brighter with citrus and acidity, crushed spearmint and sugar; transitioning into a sweet, dry finish. Excellent depth.
About the cask:
This 2000 single-cask is from a producer that most of you all know well by now, the under-the-radar star Domaine de Jean-Bon. We went back to visit the mother-daughter duo Clémence and Beatrice Sourdois who run the distillery and had another excellent time tasting through their cellar. They own a small polyculture farm with grains and animals in addition to grapes; the Armagnac production was once an afterthought but in recent decades has become their principal activity.
The cellar is in a small, tidy annex building on the farm and very dry, so the proofs even back into the 1980s vintages often remain above 50%, but the fruit is all there, too.
Practically everything is a banger which makes selection so difficult, but the 2000 stood out to us as a perfect example of the house style: an unabashedly bold and flawless high proof Armagnac, with excellent fruit and a buttery roundness on the palate.
