Introducing MAKATZAK WILD WINES

Notes From The Field

MAKATZAK WILD WINES

WINEMAKER: AITOR IRAZU ALONSO

REGION: BASQUE COUNTRY

VILLAGE: AIA

CERTIFIED ORGANIC/BIODYNAMIC

About the Domaine: Aitor Irazu is out to make world-class white wine in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain on the Atlantic Ocean. The Basque region is a much-renowned gastronomic capital, but the local wines – known as Txakoli – are typically forgettable, spritzy affairs to pair with local seafood. Farming biodynamically a forgotten plot of vines on an isolated valley sheltered from the coastal Atlantic winds, Aitor is crafting magical high-tension and profound wines that has made us rethink Txakoli’s potential.

Your bottles:

Sorkin, Vintage 2021

White | 100% Hondarrabi Zuri

Txakoli is made from the Basque grape Hondarrabi Zuri, also known as Petit Corbu across the border in France.  This incredible first vintage from Aitor Irazu has all the laser-like acidity that's typical of Txakoli, but also a depth of fruit and texture we have never tasted before in wines from the region. Sorkin means sorcerer in Basque and this is indeed a magical cuvée: seriously delicious, micro-quantity and currently being poured at the best restaurants across Spain. Aged in stainless-steel tanks for 6 months before bottling.

Narrasti, Vintage 2021

White | 100% Hondarrabi Zuri

Narrasti (which means lizard in Basque) has a bit more richness and grip than Sorkin, but is equally delicious and even smaller production. The fruit comes from the upper third of Aitor’s vineyard and is aged in oak barrels for six months before bottling.
